Singing our hearts out, standing on chairs
Spending the time like we were millionaires
Laughing our heads off, the two of us there
Spending the time like we were millionaires
-Millionaires, The Script

I’ve heard this song a few times and I’ve really been impacted by the words. In fact, I would I say I’ve been a bit jolted over it.

There have been more times than we would like to admit when life has been a real struggle. I can be tempted to enter into bitterness over where God has me serving right now and why it’s taking me so much effort just to keep things together. We’ve realized that our last ten or so years have been more about survival than living out our potential (maybe that’s why). As I look around me and see all the things in the world that I don’t have and comparing myself to others, I can begin to let my mind wander to a place that’s not so healthy…another area that can pick up muck. Now don’t get me wrong, I always keep in mind those people in the world who have it much worse than I could ever imagine. There is no question Who has blessed us and the True Source of all the sustenance that surrounds us.

When I listened to the lyrics of this song, I really started to think about how I have truly hit the lottery in my life with the time I’ve been given with my fantastic family. When I come home after being away and spend time with the love of my life and our great kids, there is nothing more that I could ever want. I don’t have to tell you that life is often hard, but have you ever really stopped to count your blessings? Do you live like a millionaire with things that money can’t buy? Are you at a place in life where you have become distracted from the things of true value that are sitting right in front of you?

I was talking to Heather and discussing the fact that if we had all the money in the world, but one of our family members was suddenly gone, we could never buy back another one of those days. And if we could buy anything back, there would be no amount that we wouldn’t shell out just to have another hour. You really don’t know how valuable your loved ones are until they’re gone, so don’t miss spending the fortune of time together while you have it.

I also want to mention the freedom that comes with living in this appreciation of time and love. The lyrics of this song remind me so much of who Heather and I are at our cores and our passion to let those folks out of their cages more often. When we do cut ourselves loose, it gets pretty dangerous, yet so much fun. It’s these two folks that pull out the deepest laughter from within us. Do you have the freedom to be who you are even if it seems foolish to others? Are the people in your life encouraging you to be more of who you were created to be or are you allowing yourself to be turned into something that you don’t want? Just remember that others are so much more blessed when you give the gift of your true self. Don’t rob us!

Here’s a video of a group who has done an amazing job covering this song. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
